03/15/2013 - Theodore's Original Red Hots

If you’ve spent years loving those famous charbroiled hot dogs, look no further than Ted Liaros himself- he’s taken that beloved style of hot dog and opened up his very own establishment, Theodore’s. Theodore (grandson of the original “Ted”) has spent his life in the hot dog business- trust us- it’s what he knows and does very well. When you walk into a Theodore’s, you’ll get the familiarity of the tradition in Buffalo that you’ve known with a new twist. They’re home to the “fring” (half fries & onion rings), and The Kilroy chicken sandwich (a custom dry-rub) along with other charbroiled sandwiches and fast food items. Ted said in a statement at the beginning of his new venture “Our plans are to provide WNYers with the best charcoal hot dog experience they can have in an environment they find friendly, with service they find consistent and superb, as well as to serve other char-broiled sandwiches and fast food items. That’s what we plan to do, and we plan to do it as aggressively and successfully as we can.” Believe us, true story.

GRAND ISLAND 1752 Grand Island Blvd Grand Island, NY 14072 716-773-5459 CHEEKTOWAGA 3385 Union Road Cheektowaga, NY 14225 716-901-0798 WILLIAMSVILLE 7500 Transit Road Williamsville, NY 14221 716-276-8409

01/04/2013 - Michael’s Town Shanty has great homestyle food

From the Buffalo News Gusto, BY: ANNE NEVILLE

Michael’s Town Shanty has great homestyle food From burgers to Polish buffet, Town Shanty is great! Michael’s Town Shanty is a modest, homey place with a few surprises. It’s set up like so many Western New York taverns, most of which serve very good food. The front room contains a horseshoe-shaped bar with small tables for diners off to the side. The back room, with about a dozen tables, is one of those comfortable, unpretentious places full of the happy chatter of families, couples and small groups.

The Shanty offers a Polish buffet for just $8.99 from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, and that’s what John, Dan, Ruth and I were interested in. We were greeted right away by a young woman server and an energetic man who guided us to a table and showed us the menu specials. He was the owner, Michael.

One of the laminated pages he handed us was a list of 17 burgers, most of which were pretty unusual, such as the picnic burger, which is topped with baked beans and cheese. Michael said that customers love the Shanty Mak, a homemade version of the Big Mac, with the restaurant’s own special sauce. Most of the burgers were between $6 and $8.

Although it didn’t apply, Michael also handed us an interesting list of $6.99 dinners served from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and also on Saturday. The entree choices included pork loin, chopped sirloin or chicken Cordon Bleu, and came with either soup or salad and a chocolate mousse.

Another special of the house is a $10.95 seafood buffet offered Wednesdays between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Fish also takes center stage on Friday, with a $9.99 fish fry, Cajun grouper ($8.99) and crab-stuffed fish ($10.50).

The guys ordered from the menu and Ruth and I chose the buffet. Our server said the buffet included chicken, cabbage, lazy pierogi, kielbasa and pork chops – remember that list and you will be able to laugh at me.

The two menu items were excellent. Dan’s Reuben burger ($7.50) was a 6-ounce, hand-formed beef patty, nicely grilled and topped with the ingredients of a Reuben – sliced corned beef, sauerkraut and melted Swiss, with Thousand Island dressing on the side. It was an unusual idea, and a winning one.

John is picky about meatloaf, so I knew the bar was high when he ordered the meatloaf stack ($8.99). The dinner started with mashed potatoes, topped with a sizable chunk of meatloaf. A generous portion of corn was arranged around the central pile, the whole thing was doused with brown gravy and several crispy, lightly breaded onion rings were on top. Almost everything about it was good, especially the nicely spiced taste and consistency of the meat.

Ruth and I took samples from the long metal tray on the buffet, which were all kept very hot. The golumpki, or beef-and-rice-filled cabbage rolls covered with tomato sauce, were plump and tender. The zing of contrasting flavors made the sweet and sour cabbage, and although we found the chicken breast pieces a bit dry, we loved the peppered noodles. A bowl of lazy pierogi was creamy and satisfying, the potato cakes had a nice crunchy breading and the segments of kielbasa were very tasty. We wondered about the pork chops our server had mentioned, then went back for seconds, finishing off with a small peach cobbler.

We finished, paid, and walked to the door of the back room to peek into the bar. It was then that I spotted three more large metal trays about six feet away from the main part of the buffet. I asked our server what was in them. “You didn’t get any pierogi?” she asked. The overlooked trays contained pork chops and two kinds of pierogi.

I blamed myself for the oversight and promised to return for what I am sure are stellar pierogi.

Michael’s Town Shanty
Where: 2400 Clinton St., Cheektowaga (824-6775)
3.5 pennies (Out of four)
Hours: Opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday, noon on Sunday.
It closes at 8 p.m. daily except for Friday and Saturday, when it closes at 9 p.m. Wheelchair-accessible: Yes

12/17/2012 - Modern Edge

Modern Edge “hopes you have the time of your life” Buffalo’s new cover band brings fun and fresh attitude to various stages. Buffalo natives Rich, Charlie, Pete, Andy and Glenn have two things in common: they love performing music, and they never want to see a dance floor empty. Their cover band, “Modern Edge,” is coming together to prove Buffalo can have a rock band that focuses on the audience and atmosphere. “It’s all about the crowd, it’s not really about us,” said Rich, the lead singer. “We have no image, no drama.” The middle-aged rock stars, managed by Club Infinity owner Ken Shelley, have finally found what they’ve been looking for: a band that puts the crowd first. Glenn, the bassist, said that’s exactly what the Buffalo music scene needs right now. “None of us want this to be a job,” Glenn said. “This is a hobby; it’s fun – bunch of 40-year-olds living the dream. As long as everyone’s out there dancing, as long as I can do that, I feel like I’m doing a good thing.” Rich, Glenn, guitarists Pete and Andy and drummer Charlie each have over 20 years of musical experience – but it wasn’t until they met a little over a month ago that they found instant musical chemistry and similar aspirations with other people. They began having practices and booking gigs immediately. Modern Edge’s first gig is at Tony Rome’s on New Year’s Eve 2012, and they’re booked every weekend through March. Their songs by bands like Journey, 3 Doors Down, Green Day and Sum 4 are brilliantly similar to originals fused with unprecedented fervor. Modern Edge’s quick success can only be a testament to what their future holds. Each member is finally in a band where they can have fun while putting the music and crowd first. And that is what will separate them from other bands in Buffalo. To them, when they see music bringing joy to the crowd, it brings joy to their lives. And that is what it’s all about. -Lisa Khoury

11/27/2012 - Adam's Rib, New Owners!!

Pattie Macaluso was a waitress at Adam’s Rib for 14 years. Before she left, she made the owners of her favorite prime rib restaurant promise her when they decided to sell, she’d be the first to get a phone call.

Macaluso got her wish. Now she owns it, she’s keeping Adam’s Rib just as she remembers it – serving some of Western New York’s most well-known prime rib and seafood daily – only with a “lighter, fresher look.”

“I worked here 14 years, and I’ve been gone 14 years and the same people come in here for steaks and seafood,” Macaluso said. “So there is something to be said about the food and consistency over the years and the excellence of the food and the staff too.

”The food ranges from a lighter-fare menu with open-steak sandwiches for $9.99 to a dinner menu with large-cut prime rib for $30. The dinner menu includes lobster tail, scallops, shrimp scampi, strip steak, filet, chicken potpie, and lamb chops among others.

Macaluso, her husband John and brother Phil Grey are taking over Adam’s Rib from former owners Millie and Jerry Koeteras, who owned the restaurant for 35 years. Jerry was a bartender and Millie was a hostess at Adam’s Rib before buying it from the original owner, Dick Lewis.

Macaluso and her husband also own Macaroon’s Nightclub in Cheektowaga and Shadow Lounge & Restaurant on Hertel Avenue. They are confident their 18 years of experience in owning a business can benefit Adam’s Rib.

The new owners are updating the menu, adding items like a caprese salad, spinach salad and daily special entrées. They are adding craft beers and flavored martinis to the bar. Soon, Adam’s Rib will offer happy hour and late-night specials.

Macaluso considers Adam’s Rib as the place where “everybody knows your name.” Many of the customers come from out of town to see the bartender of 25 years, Kevin Godzich. Chef Kevin Allen cooks with fresh, locally grown ingredients for his customers.

Macaluso has a fresh vision for the restaurant she has loved for 28 years, but she is determined to keep its community-oriented legacy alive.

07/29/2012 - Remington Tavern & Oyster Bar

Today’s post is written by guest blogger Alexandra Farrington, we hope to post more articles from her in the future! Thanks Alex!
For months the rumors surrounding Remington Tavern have been flying. As a big fan of both Chefs behind the restaurant, Mark Hutchinson and Paul Jenkins, as well as a big fan of oysters, it was one of the local restaurant happenings that I have been most looking forward to. Through the spring and early summer I waited, eagerly. Then, to my surprise, Remington Tavern opened on a random Wednesday mid-July without any fanfare or announcement. I grabbed my favorite dinner companion, Adam (a local chef) and we took the short drive up Delaware Ave. for dinner.

Quick Info:

Restaurant Type: Casual Fine Dining, Modern Industrial Dining

Cuisine: Fine Dining, Seafood

Location: North Tonawanda

Price: Cocktails $6-10, Appetizers $8-14, Entrees $11-26

The tavern is unassuming from the outside, a theme I found throughout the night, but walking in, the grandness of the space is seriously impressive. The entire space is open: lofty ceilings, marble topped horseshoe bar, and long red leather banquets. Even with all the “big-ness” Remington Tavern still feels inviting, an industrial elegance I’d call it. There are sleek duel fireplaces to warm it up on cold-nights, the tabletops are stainless steel, and the red-bordered cloth napkins give a nod to New England seafood joints. An old coal shoot has been turned into an awesome light fixture over the bar, the hardwood floors are oiled, not sealed, for easy clean up and no slipping. Every detail has been carefully thought out. The vibe is great.

The wine and beer menus have fantastic choices at every price point and a great variety of draft and bottled beers. We opted for the Cave Spring Dry Riesling to go with the expansive tasting menu we ended up lining up for ourselves. We were told that this will be the only menu that will stay consistent, as all the others change frequently, if not daily. I love restaurants that do this, and with Remington being so new they aren’t held to anyone’s expectations or “favorites” so they can take risks.

It was hard to choose what to order, as I didn’t have a chance to look at their menu beforehand, but I doubt I could’ve made a bad decision. We started with the Hush Puppies (above) and the Bahamian Conch Chowder. Both of these dishes are very important to me; the former because I spent several years living in the south, and the latter because I spent several more years living in the Bahamas. The puppies were great. If you’ve never had a hush puppy, as our server assumed we had not, I’ll describe them as fried pillows of corn goodness. She described them as cornballs, fried, rolled in Cajun salt and served with cane syrup. They arrived, steaming hot, perfectly crispy on the outside, moist, but not gummy, on the inside. The Cajun salt brought them to another level, and I was definitely guilty of double dipping on the cane syrup. Adam described them as “chef food,” plain and simple deliciousness.

My chowder arrived in a huge teacup, and immediately I breathed a sigh of relief. It had that burnt red color of the traditional conch chowder that I know and love, and smelled just like it should. The conch was tender, but was cut big enough to get a nice bite of it. The vegetables were diced small enough to get a good mix on your spoon along with the perfectly seasoned broth. Yes, broth. This is not thick, creamy, chowder; its Bahamian. In talking with Adam after our dishes had been taken, I commented that the soup was perfect, “it was even served with the obligatory Saltine crackers.” We pondered on it a minute, that it might seem odd in such a restaurant, serving crackers with soup, instead of a baguette or fancier carbs, but all Bahamian conch chowder is served with Saltines. It’s a small thing, but worth mentioning. I could talk for days about that chowder.

Next we ordered from the raw bar. They have a guy shucking right there for you to watch if you so choose- which is fantastic in my opinion. That night there was three types of oysters on the menu ranging from the light, clean, and super salty Wellfleets, to the more mild Cape Cods, to the meaty and briny Nova Scotias. If you’re not up on your oyster regions, ask your server, ours seemed really knowledgeable. We got the variety dish (top), which was served up on a bed of crushed ice with lemon wedges, mignonette, and cocktail sauce with fresh grated horseradish.

For the full review visit: Buffalo Eats

From their homemade spices and rubs to the apple and hickory wood, these 3 brothers don't hold back on bursts of flavor when it comes to smoking BBQ.

JJ and Kevin Richert , Owners and Executive Chefs of Torches Restaurant on Kenmore Ave. in Buffalo, and their creative brother, Mark Richert, have planned to take over the streets AND water of Tonawanda, NY.

Smoke on the Water's anticipated grand opening will be Spring of 2012, kicking it off with a tattooed pig spinning gracefully in the new smoker, built by the brothers of course.

The smoke and smell of the mouth watering BBQ will trickle down the canal reeling in serious boat traffic. Luckily, there will be outdoor seating on the 2 story deck, tables inside, along with a huge bar to chug back a cold Budweiser.

WNY...You better be ready for this BBQ joint. It's just a short drive to Niagara Falls, plus Lakes Erie and Ontario.
Nearby state parks offer skiing in the winter and cycling in the summer. Amherst is also 15 minutes from Buffalo, which has a burgeoning arts scene and a variety of jobs.

The University of Buffalo plays a large role in community activities, not to mention in stable employment opportunities. --N.A

<a id="magSubscription"
